How did the fungus get there?
Fungal growth inside photographic lenses is a common problem that can occur when the lens is not stored properly or is exposed to high humidity or moisture. Fungal spores are present in the air and can settle on the lens surface or inside the lens when it is not used or stored properly.
When the lens is not in use, the internal environment of the lens can become warm and humid, creating ideal conditions for fungal growth. The fungus can then start to grow on the organic materials inside the lens, such as the lubricants and adhesives that hold the lens elements together, and can cause damage to the lens coatings and optical surfaces.
Fungal growth can also be accelerated by exposure to heat, which can cause the lens coatings to break down and create a hospitable environment for fungus to grow.
